Racing Welfare

The registered charity Racing Welfare is also a company limited by guarantee with the Jockey Club being the sole member. It was formed in 2001 by the amalgamation of three other racing charities:

  • The Stable Lads Welfare Trust
  • The Jockey Club Charitable Trust
  • The Racing Welfare Charities

There are 60,000 people working in the horseracing and Thoroughbred breeding industry. Stud and stable staff work long hours in all sorts of weather conditions, facing potential dangers whenever they are handling the highly strung Thoroughbred.

Falls and injuries happen daily and can result in long-term disability, premature arthritis and rheumatism leading to early retirement. The industry has a duty of care for these backroom boys and girls. We must support the unseen army who form the backbone of racing. Without their love and devotion for the horses they care for, racing would struggle to exist.

Racing Welfare is the only charity that offers help to all of racing’s workforce by providing:

  • Support for the injured, the ill and the disabled
  • Welfare officers in all the main racing centres offering information and advice
  • Financial support for those in need
  • Affordable housing for the retired
  • A holiday scheme for disabled beneficiaries
  • Education
