Huw Williams appointed General Manager at Wincanton Racecourse

3rd July 2015

Jockey Club Racecourses today announced the appointment of Huw Williams as General Manager of its Wincanton Racecourse.

Williams, 52, will be moving to take up the position at Wincanton Racecourse from his role as General Manager at Warwick Racecourse, which he has held for the past 10 years. Prior to working for Jockey Club Racecourses, he spent six years working at racetracks in America.

A popular racecourse in the heart of Somerset, Wincanton stages 17 Jump racing fixtures each year. With more than £1 million of prize money available in 2015, highlights in its season include the Badger Ales Chase Day, featuring the Grade 2 Stan James Elite Hurdle and the Badger Ales Trophy (Listed Handicap Chase), and Bathwick Tyres Kingwell Hurdle Day, when contenders for the Cheltenham Festival Champion Hurdle line up in the Grade 2 contest.

In addition to overseeing the successful running of racing fixtures, Williams will also be responsible for continuing the growth across all areas of the venue, including its popular conferences and events operation. In 2015, Wincanton was once again voted as one of the top racecourses in England and Wales for visitor attraction and customer experience by VisitEngland and holds an ROA Gold Standard Award in recognition for its excellent owners’ raceday experience.

In his new role, Williams will continue to report to South West Regional Director for Jockey Club Racecourses, Ian Renton, who is responsible for the running of Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick and Wincanton. He will remain part of the senior management team for the South West Region.

Williams will succeed Steve Parlett after his move to fellow Jockey Club Racecourse, Kempton Park, as General Manager. A start date for the move will be confirmed in due course and a recruitment process will now be launched to appoint a new General Manager at Warwick.

Huw Williams said:

“I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to move within Jockey Club Racecourses to Wincanton. After nearly 10 years at Warwick Racecourse, I will be sad to leave, but equally I look forward to taking on a new challenge in the heartland of National Hunt racing.”

Ian Renton, South West Regional Director for Jockey Club Racecourses, said:

“After 10 successful years running Warwick, I am very pleased Huw has agreed to become General Manager at Wincanton Racecourse. The skills that he has used to good effect at Warwick and his great passion for Jump racing will be of great benefit to Wincanton and I am very pleased Huw will continue to play a pivotal role in the South West region.”

Jo Hepburn, Chairman of Wincanton Racecourse, said:

"We are very much looking forward to Huw coming to lead the team here at Wincanton. He will bring with him a wealth of experience from his time at Warwick and I am confident he will fulfil his role with great skill and enthusiasm. He is passionate about Jump racing and already knows our local trainers well. His broader experience will also give Wincanton the opportunity to look at our activities outside of racing in a new light. We are looking forward to him getting started. "

Andrew Clark, Chairman of Warwick Racecourse, said:

“Huw has done an exceptional job at Warwick. We wish him well at Wincanton where I have no doubt his performance will be excellent. Personally I have very much enjoyed working with him in the past year and a half and we’re pleased he has been offered another role in the Group. Although we will be sorry to see him go, we look forward to welcoming a similar calibre candidate to lead Warwick in the future.”
