New General Manager for Nottingham Racecourse
6th August 2014
James Knox, who brings extensive experience from the world of catering at major British sporting and leisure venues, has been appointed as the new General Manager of The Jockey Club’s Nottingham Racecourse.
He is currently General Manager of Jockey Club Catering at Nottingham’s sister racecourse at Sandown Park south of London.
In the past, Aberdeen-born James has worked for Jockey Club Catering at Huntingdon and Warwick Racecourses, as well as in the Nottingham Royal Centre and National Ice Centre, the Harrogate International Centre and a variety of hotels in Aberdeen and Nottingham.
During his 21 months at Sandown Park, he has overseen the creation of the new Equus Restaurant at a cost of £350,000. He has also been the ‘sustainability champion’ for Jockey Club Catering, supporting the group’s 15 racecourses.
His appointment at Nottingham Racecourse results from the decision to have a dedicated General Manager at the East Midlands venue for the first time in more than eight years.
Pip Kirkby has jointly managed both Market Rasen Racecourse and the Colwick Park track for The Jockey Club, the largest commercial group in British horse racing, since 2006.
Expansion since the creation of the five-racecourse East region within the Jockey Club Racecourses group led to the plan to recruit a General Manager who will be solely responsible for the racecourse.
Nottingham Racecourse’s success is illustrated by the increase in its fixture list to more than 20 days in 2014, while The Jockey Club’s commitment to the venue was demonstrated by an additional 17% investment in prize-money last year.
Amy Starkey, Regional Director - East, Jockey Club Racecourses, said:
“We are delighted to appoint James Knox from Jockey Club Catering to this exciting role at Nottingham Racecourse. We believe that Colwick Park has much potential both as a racecourse and as a regional conference and events centre. James’ experience and ability ideally position him to take forward the racecourse to the next level as part of The Jockey Club group.
“Pip Kirkby will continue to play a key role in the East region of Jockey Club Racecourses as the dedicated General Manager of Market Rasen Racecourse and as a key member of the regional management team.”
James Knox, General Manager, Nottingham Racecourse, said:
“I am thrilled to have been given this opportunity to lead the excellent team at Nottingham and develop the racecourse within The Jockey Club. I aim to use my experience within the catering business of the group to manage a racecourse directly for the first time. I am also delighted to have the chance to return to the city of Nottingham where I have many happy memories from my time at the Royal Centre and Ice Centre.”
