Dual Group 1 winning miler DICK TURPIN will embark on his stallion career in early 2012 when he stands at The National Stud, Newmarket.

The Richard Hannon trained son of ARAKAN was purchased by The National Stud following his recent Gr.1 victory in the Premio Vittorio Di Capua; a majority share in the horse will be retained by The National Stud and the rest will be syndicated.  The purchase of DICK TURPIN is the first such transaction by the Stud since its transfer to The Jockey Club in 2008.

Brian O’Rourke, Managing Director of The National Stud, spearheaded the project to bring a new stallion to The National Stud for 2012:
“I am very keen to keep the momentum of the Stud’s recent successes by finding new and exciting stallions.  The market is very competitive but I think we have found a future star in DICK TURPIN.  He has performed consistently at the highest level and is very good looking with a nice easy action.  I believe he presents a fantastic commercial opportunity for the type of breeders we want to attract to The National Stud.”
Incoming Chairman of The Nationa Stud, Ben Sangster, was also heavily involved in the deal:
“We have had tremendous support not only from The Jockey Club but obviously from the Hannons, Peter Doyle and John Manley – we are extremely happy to be standing a tough and consistent performer from such a high class stable as Richard’s.  I hope this project cements The National Stud’s growing reputation as a forward thinking, competitive breeding facility.”
DICK TURPIN’S career spanned 3 seasons and has seen him win at Gr.2 level as a juvenile and Gr.1 level at 3 and 4 years old.  He has beaten more than 25 Group performers and winners during his career including Richard Hannon’s other stable star Canford Cliffs and the likes of Cityscape and Lope De Vega.

His trainer Richard Hannon commented:
“Dick Turpin has won at every level during his racing career and being a group wining 2 year old should mean he really appeals to commercial and home breeders alike.  We always thought a lot of him at home and he has proved his class on the race course time and time again.  He was a genuine racehorse and had a great turn of foot that served him well in both of his Gr.1 victories.”
Mr John Manley has owned Dick Turpin throughout his racing career:
“I liked him the day I saw him as a yearling. He has given my family and me so much pleasure in the last three years. He has never had a day’s sickness, has a great temperament, is very sound and correct and he has been the epitome of consistency from 6 furlongs to a mile. I am very pleased he is going to such a reputable stud.”
