The Jockey Club, the largest commercial group in British racing, today announced the election of Peter Daresbury and Roger Weatherby to its Board of Stewards[1] for 2013 and the appointment of Bernard Kantor (Honorary), Peter Jensen, John Warren and James Westoll (Ordinary) as four new Members.

Steward appointments

The Jockey Club's Board of Stewards is nominated and elected from its Members to oversee the performance of the Group. The Lord Daresbury, Chairman of The Jockey Club's Aintree Racecourse and its Jockey Club Catering joint venture with Compass, and Roger Weatherby, Chief Executive of Weatherbys Bank and Chairman of the Racing Foundation, are elected for three-year terms to 31st December 2015.

After four years as a Steward, Sandy Dudgeon will stand down on 31st December 2012 as he is moving overseas on secondment.

The Jockey Club's 2013 Board of Stewards will be: Nicholas Wrigley, Senior Steward; Sir Ian Good CBE, Deputy Senior Steward; Julia Budd, The Lord Daresbury; Nicholas Jones; Andrew Merriam; The Duke of Roxburghe; and Roger Weatherby.

Nicholas Wrigley, Senior Steward [2] of The Jockey Club, said:

"I’m delighted to welcome Peter and Roger to the Board of Stewards. They bring tremendous racing knowledge, business experience and a real passion for our sport that will benefit both The Jockey Club as a Group and British racing through their new roles."

Member appointments

The Jockey Club is making four appointments of new Members from 1st January 2013. Members are appointed on account of their knowledge and experience of horseracing, alongside a commitment to the sport and The Jockey Club achieving its vision.

Members are effectively ‘trustees’ of The Jockey Club, however they may not profit from their role, as all the Group’s profits are invested into British racing. From 2013, there will be 154 Members, including 22 Honorary Members.

Bernard Kantor, Group Managing Director of Investec plc, Non-Executive Director of Phumelela Gaming and Leisure and racehorse owner and breeder, is elected as an Honorary Member.

Peter Jensen, Chairman of The Jockey Club's Nottingham Racecourse and a former of the SmithKline Beecham executive board, John Warren, Bloodstock and Racing Advisor to The Jockey Club's Patron, HM The Queen, and James Westoll, Chairman of The Jockey Club's Carlisle Racecourse, are each elected to Ordinary Membership.

Nicholas Wrigley said:

"I welcome wholeheartedly Bernard, Peter, John and Jamie to The Jockey Club as Members. Each continues to make a distinct and invaluable contribution to British racing and we look forward to them making further active contributions to The Jockey Club and our sport."

Further appointments within the Group:

At its Members meeting on 10th December 2012, The Jockey Club also approved the appointment of:

Tom Goff as a non-executive director of The National Stud for a period of three years to 31st December 2015
