The Jockey Club’s popular Grassroots Flat Series is set to return for the 2014 season on Saturday 10th May and
sees the largest commercial Group in British racing, which reinvests every penny it makes back into the sport, once again putting up £50,000 across two Series finals.

Beginning and concluding at Nottingham Racecourse, the Series consists of 36 qualifiers split into two distance categories, Sprint and Middle Distance, taking place across eight of The Jockey Club’s racecourses. The 18 qualifiers for each distance culminate in two £25,000 finals staged at Nottingham Racecourse on Wednesday 1st October 2014. To be eligible to compete in either the 6f Class 3 Sprint Final or 1m2f Class 3 Middle Distance Final, horses need to have run in at least one of the equivalent qualifying races.

The Jockey Club’s Grassroots Series, staged for both Flat and Jumps racing, have both been well supported by connections since their inception in 2012 attracting considerable field sizes at the finals. Run as part of The Jockey
Club’s commitment to support all levels of British racing, the Grassroots Series aims to provide opportunities for horses operating below the highest level to compete for considerable prize money.

With Jockey Club Racecourses in the first group of racecourses to sign three-year Prize Money agreements with The Horsemen’s Group that represents owners, trainers, breeders, jockeys and stable staff, the group has been granted ‘Premier Tier’ status from 2014. The ‘Premier’ classification by The Horsemen’s Group, underpinned by the British Horseracing Authority, recognises The Jockey Club’s industry-leading prize money record, as well as a commitment to put at least 40% of betting-related media growth for the next three years into prize money. In 2014, it plans to contribute from its own resources a historic high of £19.5 million across its 15 racecourses, subject to any abandonments.

Paul Fisher, Group Managing Director, Jockey Club Racecourses, said:

“We recognise the importance of prize money at all levels of the sport for owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff, and we are delighted by their support for both our Flat and Jumps Grassroots Series. With £50,000 on offer at the finals, I hope The Jockey Club Grassroots Flat Series once again proves popular for horsemen, and in return they support those investing the most back into British racing.”
