Cheltenham Racecourse

Cheltenham Racecourse is keen to ensure we have a limited impact on our local residents as possible.


In recent years, we have put in a number of measures including the provision of temporary toilets on the local streets for the major meetings, traffic management, and resident permit processes and a range of other measures to mitigate our impact on the local community.


The racecourse welcomes half a million racegoers each year, provides local employment and brings an estimated £100 million into the Gloucestershire economy during The Festival week. Occasionally we will have an impact that is less than desirable and we ask that in this circumstance your patience and understanding are appreciated.


This letter was sent to local residents ahead of the Festival.


For The November Meeting 2019 and The Festival in 2020, a traffic order is in place on the streets around the course. Visitors are not able to park in these streets, as only local residents will be able to park using their parking permit.


For local residents, two parking permits are issued by the council, via MiPermits. To order your permit please call MiPermits on 0345 520 7007.


Information correct as of our 2019-20 season


At The November Meeting 2019 and The Festival 2020, a section of New Barn Lane will be shut to non-racing traffic, including the road between the main racecourse roundabout and the junction with Albert Drive.


This is to improve the safety of the many thousands of pedestrians who leave the racecourse on foot as well as the added benefit of improved movement of local bus services to town and the station.


It will only be in operation during the exit stage of the event, so between the hours of 5pm and 7pm. 


We have worked alongside both Gloucestershire Police and the local council and hope that it will prove to be a successful trial both for the safety of our racegoers as well as for local residents, which would then be implemented at both The November Meeting and The Festival moving forward.


Those who need access to residences or businesses in close proximity to the racecourse will still be able to reach their destination.  

Information correct as of our 2019-20 season


Evesham Road (A435) - During The Festival 2020 and the first two days of The November Meeting 2019, the Evesham Road (A435) is closed in a southbound direction, for local road users, between approximately 10.30am and 13.30. The road is then closed again between approximately 16.30 - 19.30 (or 15.00 and 18.30 at The November Meeting). This will allow cars to enter the course but not allow non-raceday traffic to travel south to Cheltenham. Other routes will be signposted accordingly.

The closure comes into place at the crossroads (named as Smiths Lights) between Evesham Road, Southam Lane and Hyde Lane. Cars and vans not attending the racing, but using the local roads, will be asked to use Hyde Lane towards Swindon Village and Cheltenham, vehicles over 7.5T will turn left down Southam Lane and travel via Prestbury. It is advised that anyone coming from the Tewkesbury and Evesham area use the M5 Southbound from Jn 9 to Jn 10.

Due to the car park being required for racing, Services 99, 94U, D and E will not operate from the Racecourse Park and Ride site throughout The November Meeting 2019. Service 99 will instead use Cheltenham Town Football Club car park as an alternative Park and Ride site.
