Connolly’s Red Mills sponsor second 'Bumper Challenge'
30th October 2013
The Jockey Club, the largest commercial group in British horseracing, has announced the second season of a partnership with Connolly’s Red Mills, one of Ireland’s oldest and most established animal feed companies.
The deal will support a series of bumper races run exclusively at The Jockey Club’s racecourses and award the champion trainer at the finale at Aintree Racecourse, the home of The Crabbie’s Grand National, with the equivalent of £2,000 in Connolly’s Red Mills products.
The ’Connolly’s Red Mills Bumper Challenge’ – won last season by trainer Philip Hobbs - will feature a total of 13 National Hunt Flat races held exclusively across seven of The Jockey Club’s racecourses. Focussing on the foundation levels of British racing, in addition to the award for the champion trainer, Connolly’s Red Mills will supplement the prize-money on offer for the final race of the challenge at Aintree Racecourse on Friday 16th May
The initiative began on Tuesday 22nd October at Exeter Racecourse and the first race was won by the Robert Stephens trained Modus. The next instalment is due to take place at Huntingdon on Sunday 3rd November
and all the bumper races will be identified as the ‘Connolly’s Red Mills Bumper Challenge’ as the race title. The final race is not restricted to horses that have competed in any of the challenge’s previous races.
Throughout the Bumper Challenge, points will be awarded to trainers of the winning horses as well as horses placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Five points will be allocated to the trainer of the winner, three for 2nd place, two for 3rd and one for 4th. The trainer who has accumulated the most points after the final race will win the champion trainer’s prize.
Paul Fisher, Group Managing Director, Jockey Club Racecourses, said:
“After supporting a number of our tracks over the years, I’m delighted Connolly’s Red Mills has renewed their sponsorship of their Bumper Challenge, which is another initiative providing a boost to the foundations levels of British racing.”
Joe Connolly, Managing Director, Connolly’s Red Mills, said:
“We are very happy about the return of the 2013/14 Bumper Challenge. This partnership demonstrates our on-going commitment to the industry, whilst allowing us to support the people who support us.”
“We wish all the trainers who take part the best of luck in the Bumper Challenge and we hope to see some future stars along the way.”
