The Betfair Flat Series climaxes at Warwick Racecourse in October 2012

Jockey Club Racecourses (JCR), the largest racecourse group in the UK[1], and Betfair, the world’s largest betting community, today announced the launch of the new ‘Betfair Flat Series’, to be run exclusively at The Jockey Club’s racecourses in support of grassroots racing.

The Betfair Flat Series will consist of 32 races split into two distance categories – Sprint and 10 Furlong – and leading up to two £25,000 finals over 6f (Betfair Sprint Series Final) and 1m2f (Betfair 10 Furlong Series Final), which will take place at Warwick Racecourse on Thursday 4th October 2012. To be entitled to enter the corresponding final, a horse simply needs to run in at least one of the qualifiers. These will be annotated as 'Betfair Flat Series Qualifiers' after the race title.

With a focus on the foundation levels of British racing, each of the Betfair Flat Series Qualifiers are Class 4 and 5 handicaps. The opening races take place as part of Nottingham Racecourse's Kilvington meeting on the 11th May (10 Furlong Qualifier) and 12th May (Sprint Qualifier).  Betfair will support additional prize money for each qualifier.

The new series is part of a £250,000 voluntary contribution from Betfair to support prize money in grassroots racing via The Jockey Club’s 14 racecourses. It follows the highly successful Betfair Jumps Series staged between November 2011 and April 2012 at the Group’s Jump tracks, which climaxed with two finals at Haydock Park this month.

Paul Fisher, Group Managing Director, Jockey Club Racecourses, said:

“The Betfair Flat Series is another way to support the foundation levels of British racing, which are very important to Jockey Club Racecourses. We hope it proves as successful as the Jumps Series that Betfair has supported and we’ve staged over the last few months.

“With £50,000 of prize money on offer for the finals alone, we hope owners and trainers seize this opportunity, while supporting the racecourse group investing the most into British racing. We’d like to thank Betfair for their continued investment to support our sport.”

Betfair executive, Martin Cruddace, commented:

“The jumps series was a great success, and we hope this similar initiative on the flat will be equally well received and supported by connections.

“Betfair feel it is important to support not only the top end of the sport, such as through sponsorship of such races as the £1m+ Betfair King George at Ascot, but also grass roots racing.”
