Kempton Park announces new races for Silver Cups Day

25th November 2013

Kempton Park Racecourse will host the new Silver Cups Day on Saturday, 15th March 2014 following on from The Cheltenham Festival.

The card will include two new Class 2 handicap consolation races with a cumulative Total Prize Fund of £75,000 for horses eliminated from handicap races at The Cheltenham Festival: The Class 2 Handicap Chase for four year olds and upwards over a distance of 2m4½f and the Class 2 Handicap Hurdle for four year olds and upwards over 2m5f will be worth £40,000 and £35,000 respectively.

Prize money available on Silver Cups Day will amount to a total of £116,000 in comparison to its 2013 figure of £62,600.

Barney Clifford, Regional Head of Racing and Clerk of the Course, Kempton Park, said;

“The new Silver Cups Day is a great addition to Kempton Park’s Racing calendar for 2014 with Jockey Club Racecourses commitment to the sport shown further through another increase to prize money.  These two consolation handicaps will only be available to horses that are balloted out at the declaration stage from handicap chases or handicap hurdle races at the Festival, whereby no race is run at Cheltenham.

These two handicap consolation races therefore provide an alternative opportunity for horses trained specifically for those four days that were not lucky enough to get a run in the races entered.”

With proven popularity of consolation Flat races in recent years, the two handicap consolation races on Silver Cups Day will be the first National Hunt equivalent added to the fixture list in Britain outside of the Festival. Three races from the card on Silver Cups Day at Kempton Park Racecourse will also make up part of the new acquisition of races included on Channel 4 Racing’s 2014 schedule, following on from coverage of all four days of The Cheltenham Festival.
