Newmarket to stage the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes

10th June 2013

Newmarket Racecourses has received consent to stage ‘The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes’ as part of the Piper-Heidsieck July Festival, which will take place at Newmarket’s July Course from Thursday 11th to Saturday 13th July 2013.

The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes was formerly the Cherry Hinton Stakes, a Group 2 race for two-year-old fillies over six furlongs and will run on the middle day of the Festival, Friday 12th July 2013. It has a rich history in its former guise and has been won by the likes of Diminuendo, Sayyedati and Attraction, who each went on to Classic glory the following season.

Newmarket Racecourses’ chairman, Julian Richmond-Watson, said

“We are honoured the Duchess of Cambridge has graciously consented to lend her name to this prestigious race. It is a great thrill for us to have a second Royal race at our July Festival and such is the popularity of the Duchess of Cambridge, I am sure that it will be a much-welcomed addition.”

The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes joins the Group 2 Princess of Wales’ Stakes, staged on the first day of the Piper-Heidsieck July Festival, mirroring two key races at Royal Ascot, the Group 1 Prince of Wales’ Stakes and the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes. The latter, like The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, was only created for this year’s Royal Ascot (it was previously known as The Windsor Forest Stakes).

The Piper-Heidsieck July Festival is often referred to as the East of England’s Royal Ascot equivalent on a smaller and more intimate scale, with top-class Flat racing and striking fashions very much to the fore over its three days.

The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes will be sponsored by bookmakers Betfred, who also support the “Autumn Double” races at Newmarket later in the year, the Betfred Cambridgeshire and Betfred Cesarewitch handicaps. The value of 12 July’s renewal will be £80,000 – an increase of £20,000 on the total prize fund for last year’s race. The full title of the race will be The Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (Sponsored by Betfred).
