The greatest show on turf. The thrill of The Hill. Epsom plays host to the world as racegoers and fun lovers get giddy on colour, gasp in awe at the flowers the size of towers and get lost in the ups of the Downs. The crown jewel of all races. The one that sired all the others. Historic, unmatchable, eternal. Birthplace of thoroughbred sprinting, it’s one chance for three year olds to make history.
The Betfred Derby. The crown jewel of all races. The one that sired all the others. Historic, unmatchable, eternal. Once chance for three-year-olds to make history.
Auguste Rodin handed a record-extending ninth Betfred Derby to trainer Aidan O’Brien when successful in today’s feature race. It was a third success for jockey Ryan Moore and a record-extending 10th for a Coolmore syndicate as owners.
Winning trainer, Aidan O’Brien said: “It’s great credit to everybody. Firstly for John (Magnier) to send a great mare to Japan and everyone is involved, there’s so many people who make this happen. He’s a total homebred horse and it’s all credit to them to make this thing happen every day.”
Epsom's five-furlong course is known as the fastest in the world and that reputation precedes the Dash more than any other race. The ultimate speed test, the Aston Martin Dash brings goosebumps to racing rookies and connoisseurs alike.
A thrilling finish to the £100,000 Aston Martin ‘Dash’ saw 25-1 chance Navello come out on top. After taking the lead well inside the final furlong, the four year old held off the strong late challenge of Silky Wilkie to score by a short-head in the five-furlong contest.
Winning trainer George Boughey said: “It has been quite a long-term plan for him.
“He likes fast ground and I thought a stiff pace would probably suit him. It was a bit of a nervy last furlong, but he’s progressive.
“It’s been a good couple of days - it’s nice to have winners here.”
Flat racing icon Frankie Dettori made his Derby debut in 1992. 31 years on, he set himself up for one last dance at the famous Epsom Downs. And now, more than three decades later, his own time as the name that the once-a-year punters look out for on Derby Day came to a close.
Although Frankie’s fairytale ending in the Betfred Derby wasn’t to be with Arrest finishing 10th, the legendary jockey ensured his final ride at Epsom Downs Racecourse was a winning one courtesy of Prosperous Voyage in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes.
An elated Frankie said “Last one and we won, that’s it - me and Epsom are done” as he kissed the turf. The stands packed, racecourse lined, fans came to witness sporting history and wave off racing royalty. Farewell Frankie, what a ride it’s been.
The family of Fred Done, founder and Chairman of Derby sponsor Betfred, enjoyed the perfect start to 2023 when Regal Reality (5-1) landed the opening Betfred Diomed Stakes (1m 113y).
Sporting the colours of Done’s brother Peter, the eight year old was settled at the rear of the six-strong field before beginning to make progress entering the final quarter mile. Hitting the front half a furlong out, the Intello gelding kept on well for a three quarters of a length success over 2-1 Favourite Highland Avenue.
Fred Done said; “Peter’s at Wembley Stadium today. I can’t be there unfortunately as I’m sponsoring The Derby, but what a great day to be here. He phoned me straight after the race and said ‘Bring the readies home - make sure you keep it in the family’. It’s a fabulous day for everybody.
