2019 marked the 240th annual Derby, taking place at Epsom Downs Racecourse on 1st June.

The 2019 Derby started at 4.33pm on a beautiful sunny day, with Good to Firm ground.

Bay colt Anthony Van Dyck won the race, beating 12 other contenders.

Interesting facts about the Derby at Epsom:

  • The Derby is a Group 1 race for 3-year-old colts and fillies run over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs.

  • The first Derby took place in 1780 and is named after the 12th Earl of Derby following the toss of a coin between the Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury.

  • The first ever Derby was won by Diomed, a colt owned by Sir Charles Bunbury.
