Having hit the post with two seconds earlier in the afternoon, the combination of trainer Dan Skelton and his jockey brother Harry enjoyed a change of luck in the concluding contest on Opening Day, the Grade Two Goffs Nickel Coin Mares’ Bumper, when Nan’s Choice (9-2) took the honours by a length and a half.
Dan Skelton said: “That’s her first run for us and we didn’t really know an awful lot about her to be honest with you. We’d actually not done that much with her as she’s quite a light-framed filly, but we thought she’d like a bit of decent ground.
“When she hit the front she ran around all over the shop, but what a lovely mare. I’m not surprised, as she looked quite nice in what she does, but I’d not asked her to do any wild pieces of work or anything daft like that. I’d say she has a big future.”
Harry Skelton added: “She’s very uncomplicated. I haven’t sat on her much at home, and Sean O’Connor, who rides her out every day, he gave me all the advice on her and he thought she’s been feeling pretty smart. She obviously won in very testing ground [at Gowran Park in February], and she’s put the race to bed very nicely.
“I admit half a furlong out, I thought, ‘oh no’, she had a look in front but no, very game, nice mare. There’s a big crowd and a lot to take in - a few more people than there were at Gowran, probably - and I think she’s won with a bit in hand.
“I think she’s very tough - she hasn’t got a side, very straightforward and easy going, doesn’t complain about life. She’s come home well."
