Nottingham Racecourse has announced a new partnership with the local children’s charity When You Wish Upon A Star, in the hope of helping to raise vital funds for their endeavours.

As part of the three-year deal, the charity will have the opportunity to stage bucket collections at a host of race meetings, including at 10 fixtures this coming season. There will also be a dedicated race meeting on Thursday 11th June to raise awareness of their work in the community and the opportunity to make use of the course’s hospitality facilities.

The charity was also given the chance to provide a VIP experience to two of its families last week, with the racecourse providing a behind-the-scenes tour that included a meet and greet with jockey Alistair Rawlinson and the chance to say hello to ex-racehorse and Horses for Courses ambassador Rupert Boy.

When You Wish Upon A Star was founded in Nottingham by Barbara White OBE in 1990 and has so far granted more than 19,000 wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.

Andy Cliff, Marketing and Communications Manager at the charity, revealed that the link up with the racecourse would provide much-needed help on several fronts.

He said: “We’re really excited to be partnering with Nottingham Racecourse. Their generosity and enthusiasm for supporting our mission has been incredible.

"Collaborations like this make a real difference to the families we work with, and we’re grateful to everyone at the racecourse for opening their doors and their hearts to When You Wish Upon a Star.

"This partnership will enable us to be in front of a lot more people and raise our profile in the local and national community, but it’s also a good way of giving back to our partners as well.

“It’s good to be in a different space from the usual fundraising routes and to be able to come down to a sports venue and engage at so many fixtures will really help us. We’re grateful for the kindness of the horse racing community.

“We’ve granted over 19,000 wishes so far thanks to our founder Barbara White and as you imagine with kids we’ve had so many different suggestions over the years. It could be anything from meeting a celebrity to being a princess for the day and we quite simply try to facilitate as many as we possibly can. We can’t wait to see what we can achieve together over the next three years.”

Tommy Williams, General Manager at Nottingham Racecourse, commented: “We’re thrilled to have When You Wish Upon A Star on board as a charity partner over the next three years.

“There are so many different aspects to raising funds for charitable causes and we’re really pleased that we can help the charity to achieve its mission by offering up our services.

“Engaging the community and giving back as much as we can is at the absolute heart of everything we do here and it’s fantastic to be able to help such a worthy cause.”
