JOCKEY OF THE MONTH IS BACK: THE MONTHLY VOTING CELEBRATION OF BRITAIN’S TOP JOCKEYS RETURNS
For immediate release on Monday 2nd November: Great British Racing's Jockey of the Month competition is back, giving sporting fans the chance to celebrate the jockeys who have caught their eye and vote for the rider they believe deserves monthly recognition.
Each month, former jockey and racing broadcaster Tom Scudamore will select three nominees who have impressed him for different reasons, sharing the stories and performances behind his choices. From standout performances and impressive wins, to battling back from injury or consistently delivering in the saddle, the award shines a spotlight on the jockeys making their mark on the sport and gives fans the chance to decide who comes out on top.
With a fresh shortlist every month, fans will have regular opportunities to champion the jockeys they admire, discover the stories behind their achievements and have a direct say in who earns the title of Jockey of the Month.
Scudamore who retired in 2023 t allied an impressive 1,511 winners during his career which places him in the top 10 of the most successful Jump jockeys of all time in Great Britain and Ireland (1,499 wins over jumps in Britain and Ireland and 12 on the Flat). His record featured 13 top-level triumphs including notable success with the Colin Tizzard-trained Thistlecrack, who carried Scudamore to victory in the 2016 King George as one of five Grade 1 wins the partnership enjoyed.
Now a presenter for ITV Racing Scudamore will select three Jump jockeys each month for the public to vote on. Scudamore's October selections:
- Adam Wedge – return after injury
Wedge, 36, his key achievements include winning the 2020 Stayers' Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival aboard Lisnagar Oscar, his first Grade 1 and Festival victory. He also had further success by winning the 2020 Welsh Grand National Aboard Secret Reprieve.
- Brendan Powell – four-timer at Ffos Las on Thursday 22nd October
Powell 31, rode his first winner in 2011 and has since enjoyed three Cheltenham Festival victories
In July 2025, Powell reached the monumental landmark of 500 career winners.
Powell has been in excellent form this season, performing with a current strike rate of 18%
- Harry Skelton – dominance in the Championship and Cheltenham success
Skelton, 37, is a leading Jump jockey and stable jockey to his brother, trainer Dan Skelton.
He is a dominating force in the 2026/27 Jump Jockey Championships and already surpassed 100 winners for the season
Speaking about his October selections Scudamore said:
"Adam had his first winner back at Hereford aboard Barafundle Bay after a very bad shoulder injury. He is one of the most stylish riders of his generation, not only for his skill but his determination as well. With the obstacles he had to overcome in coming back, he deserves to be in the reckoning".
"Brendan has had a phenomenal month, he had his first four-timer at Ffos Las, he then followed up at Cheltenham with a win aboard JPR One before winning with Triple Trade at Market Rasen, winning the valuable middle-distance veteran race. He has been having a great time and a fabulous month which hopefully sets the foundations for a great season for him."
"Harry has had a phenomenal summer and similar to the summer months, he set off in October at a relentless pace. I thought he was exceptional on Saturday (at Cheltenham) – with two different rides. He won the handicap chase aboard Here Comes Georgie, a real confident hold-up ride, idled a little bit when he hit the front, but he was able to galvanize and again it was just a ride of complete confidence. Then thirty minutes later aboard North Shore, a horse that disappointed last time out at Chepstow, he was bold and brave and never missed a beat on him. He's leading the frenetic pace in the championship, but I thought those two rides summed up his maturity, strength and confidence in the saddle at the moment."
Fans are then invited to cast their vote for their favourite and who they think deserves the top spot and the Jockey of the month title. Voting will remain open for five days, giving sporting fans the opportunity to get involved, back their chosen jockey and help decide who takes home the accolade. Once the poll closes, the winning jockey will be announced across Great British Racing’s (GBR) digital channels, alongside a dedicated website article celebrating their achievements and they’ll be awarded the coveted Jockey of The Month branded cap and the all-important kudos from fans and fellow jockeys.
The monthly voting is about recognising that great jockeyship comes in many forms. It is not just about the biggest races or the most high-profile victories, but also the determination, consistency, resilience and special performances that make racing so compelling.
