MAXIMUM FIELD CHASING WORLD’S OLDEST SPORTING TROPHY IN WEDNESDAY’S AGMA 20 YEARS OF FRANKLIN OWNERSHIP CARLISLE BELL HANDICAP

Article 24th June 2025 Carlisle

Carlisle Racecourse stages its biggest day of the Flat season on Wednesday (June 25th) - Carlisle Bell & Cumberland Plate Day.

Among the seven races on the card is the Agma 20 Years of Franklin Ownership Carlisle Bell Handicap (4.50pm), run over an extended seven furlongs.

It may be a £30,000 0-85 handicap in racing terms nowadays, but the race has plenty of significance and offers up the oldest sporting trophy in the world to still be contested in the form of the 426-year-old Carlisle Bells, which date all the way back to 1599. This year’s race has a maximum field of 17 runners while there is also the same number of runners in the consolation race, the Lady Dacre Bell Handicap.

The 426-year-old Carlisle Bells which are awarded to Wednesday’s winner

The most valuable race of the day is the £47,000 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Eternal Stakes, a Listed race over just short of seven furlongs for three-year-old fillies.

Fresh from three winners at Royal Ascot last week, including the Gold Cup on Trawlerman, dual champion jockey William Buick looks to hold a leading chance in this contest aboard Godolphin’s Verse Of Love. Trained by Charlie Appleby, the daughter of Siyouni has been successful on two of her three starts.

Tickets for Carlisle Bell & Cumberland Plate Day are still available and can be purchased online at https://www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/carlisle/events-tickets
