We are delighted that pony racing will once again be seen on British Racecourses after 593 days following the Covid pandemic, with the 2021 Racecourse Series kicking off at Carlisle Racecourse on Saturday 3rd July 2021.
There will be 20 fixtures in total with the season Finale at Wincanton Racecourse on 24th October 2021.
This year we welcome new sponsors to pony racing. Racing Welfare are sponsoring the 148 cm races and Dragon TV and Film Studios are sponsoring the 138 cm races. RaceSafe and Howdens Insurance are sponsoring the Best Turned Out throughout the series.
We are thrilled to be involved in 2 of the 3 fixtures in the the Sky Bet Sunday Series, which will showcase the sport in a new twilight slot on Sundays this summer.
Clarissa Daly, Chief Executive of the PRA, said “We are thrilled to be back pony racing. We have held 16 Point-to-Point Pony Racing fixtures and now move on to the Racecourse Series. I am sorry for the children who missed last season and in some cases missed the opportunity of their last rides on the pony racing circuit. We are very grateful to all the racecourses staging pony racing this season and supporting the junior league of racing.”
Pony racing has been the training ground for over 180 amateur and professional jockeys currently riding (see attached list of Graduates riding in 2020) as well as a number who have gone on to other careers in racing. Children from all backgrounds – urban or rural, equestrian or non-equestrian – participate in pony racing. The PRA, supported by the Racing Foundation and HBLB, makes it possible for those who don’t have access to their own pony to participate and in so doing we are able to lead the way in increasing diversity in our sport.
- The PRA runs pony races for children aged 11 to 16 years on GB racecourses
- There are 181 members of the PRA in 2021
- Pony races are run for ponies measuring 148 cm and under and 138 cm and under
- There have been 32 pony races held at 16 Point-to-Points in 2021 with 118 children riding
