Jockey Saffie Osborne feels that the only way is up for Green Falcon (5-2 joint-favourite), who produced a gutsy display to win the feature Colwick Cup at Nottingham on Construction Day (Wednesday 14th October).

The three-year-old was without a win in eight starts, but he had shown promise when third on his first try at a longer trip at Ffos Las last time out and looked suited by the step up to two miles here.

David Menuisier’s charge travelled well throughout under Osborne and took over proceedings at the three-furlong pole, finding plenty to see off the challenge of top weight Believitanducan (5-2 joint-favourite) to score by two and three quarter lengths, despite wandering across the track.

It was a performance which pleased Osborne, who feels that her charge could now rack up a sequence of successes in this sphere from his current mark.

She said: “He got a little bit lost up the straight, he was sort of wondering where he was going, but he’s done it nicely.

“I thought he ran really well at Ffos Las. His biggest asset is he can just travel off the bridle for as long as you want him to, he’s very straightforward and made my life pretty easy.

“I thought he gave me the feel of a very well handicapped horse at Ffos Las, he was quite raw and hadn’t put it all together just yet, and I think you could probably say the same thing again today.

“Even though he wasn’t carrying too much weight it’s hard for these horses to win up in that grade against seasoned and hardened stayers, so it was a really nice performance, and I think he’s going to turn into a nice horse next year.”

The success of Green Falcon was the second leg of a 10.3-1 Construction Day double for the St Leger-winning rider, following the victory of Enriched (9-4 Favourite) in the opening 31st Oct Halloween Spooktacular Novice Stakes.

Earlier on the card, the Charlie Appleby-trained Leading Role (6-1) made a nice impression when winning the £40,000 British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes on debut.

There were several interesting types in the field, including the Ed Walker-trained and eventual runner-up Space Bob, a close relation to the Queen Anne Stakes winner Ten Bob Tony.

Prominent throughout, Leading Role was asked for his effort by William Buick at the two furlong pole and he found plenty for his rider’s urgings to win by half a length.

The winning jockey was full of praise for Godolphin’s Teofilo colt after the extended mile contest.

He said: “I’m very happy with him. To be honest he’s not a horse who I’ve had much to do with, he’s bred to get further in time.

“I think pretty much everyone in that race was a three-year-old type and he’ll certainly improve for a winter on his back. I think he’ll be comfortable at a mile and a quarter and then we’ll see.”
