The £160,000 bet365 Gold Cup has attracted 70 entries for its 2022 running at Sandown Park on bet365 Jump Finale (Saturday 23rd April).
A total of 12 of the 70 entries for the 3m 4f 166y Grade Three handicap chase are trained in Ireland, with no less than nine of those hailing from the stable of Ireland’s 15-times champion Jump trainer - Willie Mullins.
Mullins, who saddled a record 10 winners at the Cheltenham Festival earlier this month, is in contention to be champion Jump trainer for the first time in the UK this season – a feat which has not been achieved by an Irish-based handler since Vincent O’Brien in the 1952/53 campaign.
Among Mullins’ nine entries is 2019 and 2000 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Al Boum Photo, who was last seen when sixth in this year’s renewal of chasing’s Blue Riband just under a fortnight ago. A total of six horses have won both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and what is now the bet365 Gold Cup, the latest being the great grey Desert Orchid who scored at Sandown Park in 1988 before going on to success at Cheltenham the following year. The five other horses to win both races are Pas Seul, Arkle, What A Myth, Mill House and The Dikler. Mullins’ contingent also includes Tornado Flyer, winner of the Grade One Ladbrokes King George VI Chase on Boxing Day.
Also among the entries are last year’s first three home – Potterman (Alan King), Kitty’s Light (Christian Williams) and Enrilo (Paul Nicholls). If successful again in 2022, Potterman would become the contest’s fifth dual winner after Larbawn (1968, 1969), Diamond Edge (1979, 1981), Topsham Bay (1992, 1993) and Ad Hoc (2001, 2003).
