NATIVE TRAIL HEADS MARKET AT 5-2 AS 37 REMAIN IN CORAL-ECLIPSE

Press Release 7th June 2022 Sandown Park

Native Trail heads the market at 5-2 with the sponsor as 37 horses go forward today for the Group One Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park on day two of The Coral Summer Festival (Saturday 2nd July). The prestigious 10-furlong contest, the first significant middle-distance clash of the generations of the Flat turf season, has been sponsored by Coral since 1976 and is shaping up for another vintage renewal.

Trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, Native Trail has yet to race beyond a mile and was last seen when successful in the Group One Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh last month. Appleby is seeking a third Coral-Eclipse victory following Hawkbill (2016) and Ghaiyyath (2020).

Fresh from saddling his sixth Derby winner at the weekend with Desert Crown, Newmarket handler Sir Michael Stoute has two entries going forward headed by Bay Bridge, who was so impressive over the course and distance last month in the Group Three Coral Brigadier Gerard Stakes. Stoute has saddled a joint-record six Coral-Eclipse winners - Opera House (1993), Ezzoud (1994), Pilsudski (1996), Medicean (2001), Notnowcato (2007) and Ulysses (2017).

Aidan O’Brien has also enjoyed half a dozen Coral-Eclipse victories and the master of Ballydoyle has 17 remaining entries, including last Friday’s Cazoo Oaks heroine Tuesday. O’Brien has tasted Coral-Eclipse success previously with Giant's Causeway (2000), Hawk Wing (2002), Oratorio (2005), Mount Nelson (2008), So You Think (2011) and St Mark's Basilica (2021).

The six-day confirmation and £50,000 supplementary entry stage for the Coral-Eclipse, which forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series, is on Monday 27th June.

Harry Aitkenhead of Coral said: “Native Trail now heads the betting for the Coral-Eclipse after the news that the 2021 Derby winner Adayar will miss the race, meaning Godolphin will be hoping the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner can come home in front at Sandown Park next month.”
