Today, the sun shone brightly for Opening Day of The Randox Grand National Festival. Against the backdrop of Liverpool, Aintree played host to the world's finest horse racing as racegoers flocked to the course to kick off the week's celebrations.
GERRI COLOMBE HAS HIS DAY IN THE SUN
Gerri Colombe, a gallant runner-up in last month’s Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, went one better at Aintree today when landing a thrilling renewal of the William Hill Bowl Chase in the Liverpool sunshine. The horse stormed to the front after multiple horses held chances heading into the final fence, eventually edging out Ahoy Senor who finished second. The win marked the first of the meeting for the duo Gordon Elliot & Jack Kennedy.
NECK AND NECK…AND NECK
The William Hill Aintree Hurdle was a thrilling spectacle today as three horses surged towards the finish line, but it was Impaire Et Passe who put his nose in front to pip Bob Olinger and Cheltenham Festival 2024 winner Langer Dan at the post and claim the win for Paul Townend, making it a second win of the day for the Mullins stable.
A stewards’ enquiry was held to look at possible interference at the finish but the placings remained unaltered.
ALL RISE FOR SIR GINO
Sir Gino raised the roof at Aintree as he continued his winning streak with victory in the Grade One Boodles Anniversary 4-Y-O Hurdle. Keeping his flawless record intact, Sir Gino secured his fourth consecutive triumph over hurdles, under the guidance of Nico de Boinville. This triumphant display marked a significant milestone for trainer Nicky Henderson, as it clinched his first win of the festival, silencing any doubts about the yard's current form. The win marked Sir Gino as the standout performer in the juvenile division and an exciting prospect for the future.
