Owner Amo Racing has twice gone close to success in the Betfred Derby, with both Mojo Star (2021) and King Of Steel (2023) finishing runner-up.
This year one of its three possible representatives is Dallas Star. The Cloth Of Stars colt is trying to follow in the footsteps of 2016 Derby hero Harzand by winning at Epsom Downs after making a triumphant seasonal reappearance in the Group Three Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown in April.
His trainer, Co. Westmeath-based Adrian Murray, is eagerly anticipating saddling his first Betfred Derby runner on Saturday.
He said on a Zoom call organised by The Jockey Club: “Dallas Star is doing very well. The plan after he won the Ballysax was to go straight to the Derby.
“I have been very happy with him since Leopardstown – he is improving all the time and we are hoping for a big run. He had a racecourse gallop at Naas last week and we were very happy with how he went.
“We probably weren’t expecting that big a run in the Ballysax but you never know sometimes what horses can do from two to three – sometimes they can disappoint you but this horse has really improved.
“We don’t really know much about him on quicker ground, although he handled it OK at Naas last week. If I had the chance, I would maybe be looking for a bit of ease in the ground.
“For me, it’s unbelievable to have a runner in the Derby and I’m very excited. It is a race I have been watching all my life and I’m sure it’s going to be a huge experience.
“We are not going over as favourite but we are delighted to be in the race and hopefully he has an each-way chance.”
Meanwhile Oisin Murphy, the three-times champion UK Flat jockey, has yet to taste success in either of the Classics at Epsom Downs, but is looking forward to his rides on Bellum Justum in the Betfred Derby and Secret Satire in the Betfred Oaks.
The 28-year-old said: “The Derby and Oaks are incredibly prestigious races that I haven’t been fortunate enough to win yet. I dreamt of being part of them as a child and one day I’d like to get my name on the roll of honour. I missed out on the ride on Adayar in 2021 when Adam Kirby became available but hopefully luck will be on my side one day and it can happen.
“I have been watching all the trials in Ireland, England and France and I think both races look open this year but are certainly not lacking in quality.
“Fortunately, Epsom has been a lucky track for me, particularly on the big days, and I have won plenty of handicaps on Derby and Oaks days.
“The Betfred Derby Festival is one meeting I always look forward to and I always hope that I can get on the scoresheet there. There is a brilliant atmosphere there with the funfair in the centre of the course and all the buses plus the true racing fans.
“Bellum Justum won the trial at Epsom over a mile and a quarter. He’s a beautiful horse with a lot of quality. We don’t know how good he is, but we’ll find out on Derby Day. Andrew (Balding, trainer) has had horses placed in the Derby and won an Oaks with Casual Look, so it would be a dream if we can take gold on Derby Day.
“In the Oaks I ride Secret Satire who deserves her place after she won a trial, the Musidora at York. Her stamina is going to be exposed on the day - if she can stay a mile and a half, which she gives herself every chance of getting as she is easy to ride, she has a lot of quality as well. I think the way she finished at York she has a chance of staying and that’s all you can ask for – often when you are sure they are going to stay, they probably lack the gears for a race like this.”
