Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup (G1) - press conference quotes

Press Release 17th March 2017 Cheltenham

PRESS CONFERENCE

Robbie Power: "I got the feel of Sizing John both at Leopardstown and in his home work that all that he did do was stay. It was just a suggestion from me, it is Jessie who does the training. But the horse has felt at home all last week that he was better form than he was going to Leopardstown.

"One of the things about him is that he has been running over two miles for so long that he is so fast over his fences. We went a good gallop all the way today, but that speed he has jumping over two miles means that, over three miles, I can take him back and fill him up everywhere through the race. It is a huge advantage.

Jessica Harrington: "At Leopardstown in the Gold Cup it is an easier four furlong from the second last - he got home easily there. Here, he got to the second last and pinged it, but it was still in the back of my mind whether he would come up the hill. However, he jumped that second last so big and so well, he didn't jump like a tired horse."

Robbie Power: "We met the last on a good stride and he pinged it. I know it is a long way up that hill - it has never felt so long in my life!"

Jessica Harrington: "If you actually think about it, if Douvan had not been around, we'd have stayed over two miles. The fact that Douvan is there, we were almost forced to step up to two miles, five furlongs or three miles.

"I genuinely thought that because he is only a seven-year-old, this year he should maybe go for the Ryanair, but his owner Alan Potts definitely wanted to go for the Gold Cup - so here we are. I just had a little bit of reservation, I thought he'd be guaranteed to win the Ryanair on form. But when I got my head around it, I thought 'right, the Gold Cup it is'".

Robbie Power: "The nicest words I ever heard were 'Gold Cup-winning jockey' announced on the podium. That sounded sweet.
"When I won the Grand National I was 25 and I thought I was going to win everything - now I am 35 I realise that I am not going to win everything, so to win a Gold Cup at this age is fantastic.

Jessie Harrington: "It is the jewel in the crown. It has not really sunk in yet, I can't believe it is true.  I am sitting here, I am about to wake up and it hasn't happened."

Robbie Power: "The race couldn't have really gone better. The plan was to be middle of the fence and keep out of trouble, but after the second I felt there was plenty of room on the inside and I switched. I was going out to the second circuit and praying that nothing would fall and bring me down - I thought that Jessie would kick my arse for being on the inside!

"But riding for Jessie is fantastic, she never ties you down to instructions, you can use your brain and go where there is a bit of room. It was Plan B to go down the inside, I found myself there and got a great run round."

Jessica Harrington: "I think Alan is speechless and this is especially great for Ann as she is not very well and it will give her a real boost.

"Alan and Ann Potts have really wanted to win the Gold Cup.  I do feel very sorry for Henry de Bromhead, with this horse and Supasundae, he did all the hard work, I have only inherited them.

"I only got them in September, I had to get to know them, how to train them. Henry had done all the work and he bought them. There was never any thought that Sizing John was to join the Potts' horses who went to Colin Tizzard - this horse was already in my yard.

"This is right up there, it hasn't sunk it yet. This is the Olympics of horseracing, and I have won the Gold Cup!"

"Sizing John is only a seven-year-old. Horses are at their peak at seven or eight, but as we all know, this is very hard - the last two Gold Cup winners have not come back. We've won it, now we've got to keep him right and come back next year. There will be a lot of younger horses coming up, and I've got to keep him sound.

"I wasn't disappointed not to go to the Ryanair. Alan Potts owns the horse, I train it. I had the horse entered in both the Ryanair and the Gold Cup."

Robbie Power: "We won the Leopardstown Gold Cup, he saw the three miles out well. There was no other race - I was very confident he'd stay, so was Jessica, and the plan's worked out - they don't always!"

Jessica Harrington: "I have not had a horse I have considered for the Gold Cup before - they have either been two milers, handicappers or not good enough!"
