Cheltenham Radio is a special radio station that  ran throughout the 4 days of the festival broadcasting 24 hours a day. The station  brought you all the colour and spectacle of jump racings biggest week with live commentary of all the races. The service was not only available in the area around the racecourse but also online.

The station features a number of hugely experience racing broadcasters including Rupert Bell and Alex Steedman with expert analysis provided by Lizzie Kelly, Cheltenham festival winning jockey among others. The station also provided regular travel updates throughout the day.

2023 Station schedule included:

  • 10:30-12:30 The daily preview with Rupert Bell and Lizzie Kelly
  • 12:30-17:45 Festival Raceday Live with Alex Steedman, Darren Owen and Lee McKenzie
  • 17:45-19:00 The Festival Review with Rupert Bell and Lizzie Kelly. A look back at the days racing with reaction from trainers and jockeys as well as a look ahead to the next day’s racing

Rupert Bell has been a sports broadcaster for well over 30 years and is a regular voice on Talksport covering a wide range of sports including Horse racing for whom he is their lead commentator. Rupert love of all things sport started with Cheltenham when he first came to the course in the early 70’s.

Alex has never ridden, trained or owned a Festival winner but he’s backed a couple and interviewed plenty who have. Tune in to hear him speak to a few more this week.

Darren’s been a Racecouse Commentator in Britain for over 25 years covering meetings around the country.


In addition to calling the horses for Racetech, he can be hear broadcasting for BBC Radio 5 Live and has been a member of their Grand National commentary team at Aintree since 2014.

 

He has been part of the Racing Post’s race reading team.
